Making Compound Characters in Microsoft Office Word

There are many things people want to be able to type in Microsoft Office Word. Sure, you can type normal words from the character in the keyboard. However, sometimes there is a time when we need to type certain symbols. For this, Microsoft Word has been made with Symbol menu. There are many symbols you can get from there. However, what if the symbol you want is not available there? Then, you need to see below.

Making Compound Characters in Microsoft Office Word

Manual Way to Combine Diacritics Surely, you have noticed that a single mathematic symbol sometimes is made of two diacritics. For example, there is p-hat symbol which appears to be letter p with carat symbol over it. If the symbol you want to type is something like that, you can combine the diacritics on your own. Here is the way you can try.

  • Type the letter on Microsoft Office Word first Click on Symbol menu and select More Symbols Select Arial Unicode MS in the Font dialog box in the upper left corner
  • Select Unicode (hex) for From dialog box in the lower right corner
  • Click on the diacritical mark you want
  • Click on Insert and then Close

After that, you should be able to have compound character you want over the letter you type on Microsoft Word earlier. It is pretty easy way you can follow. So, you don’t have to be confused if you don’t find the symbol you want in the Symbol menu of Microsoft Word. Of course, it is not the only way you can try though.

An Alternative to Combine Diacritics To tell you the truth, the alternative that I want to talk about here is the quick way to combine diacritics. However, in order to do that, you will need to remember Unicode character code. Let’s suppose you want to make y-bar symbol here. All you need to do is to type y followed by the code of bar symbol without space. So, it should be like y0305 on Microsoft Word.

After you are done with that, you need to press Alt + X on the keyboard. Then, the y0305 earlier should change into y-bar symbol immediately. Need to be known though, not all mathematic symbols can be made by combining diacritics this way. If you want to be sure, you just need to follow the first way we talked about earlier. It should work better than this alternative.
